Mountain bike shocks improve steering and overall riding comfort.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many mountain bikes have shocks for improved rider comfort and control. The shocks are most commonly found in the front fork, but some bikes also have rear suspension. Hardtail bikes are those which have only front suspension and use a fork with elastomer, steel springs with oil damping, or air spring and damping. Usually elastomer forks are found on lower end bikes, because they lack the adjustability of other types. Coil spring forks are usually the smoothest and most comfortable to ride, but are heavier than air sprung models. They are easily adjustable, and have oil to control compression and rebound. Air sprung forks are they lightest and easiest to adjust, but lack the comfort of a coil spring fork.
Bikes with rear suspension have coil and oil shocks, or air shocks. These shocks are adjustable to the riders weight and the riding conditions, and some also have a lockout feature. The lockout feature on the rear suspension can lockout or “turn off” the rear suspension temporarily to improve pedaling efficiency for climbing.
Proper maintenance of shocks is important on a mountain bike. Shocks should always be cleaned and oiled after every ride. Shocks should be cleaned by wiping off dust and dirt with a dry rag. On some models a rubber boot must be pulled back to clean the sliders. After cleaning a drop of light to medium weight oil should be applied to the seals around the sliders, or “stanchions”. |
